2022 General Obligation

Bonds Referendum

On Tuesday, November 8, 2022, Durham County voters will be asked to vote Yes or No on three separate bond referendum questions. If a majority of voters approve a referendum, general obligation bonds will be used to fund the capital improvements.

All referendum categories total $550.2 million and could potentially require up to a 2.5 cents property tax rate increase. Highlights on the bond categories are listed below and throughout the website.

The 2022 General Obligation Bond Referendum will include bond questions that total to $550,240,000 and are allocated to the following purposes

  • The $423,505,000 school bond would be used to renovate or improve existing schools and construct two new schools within the Durham Public School District.
  • The $112,740,000 community college bond supports two new classroom buildings, repairs and renovations and land acquisition needed for current and future growth.
  • The $13,995,000 museum bond supports repairs, renovations, and expansion at the Museum of Life & Science.

Durham Public Schools

Public schools will benefit from major upgrades and modernization of safety and security measures, building infrastructure such as roofing, HVAC enhancements, efficiency and renewable energy infrastructure. This bond adds much needed classroom spaces to Pre-K, elementary, and high school campuses.

Durham Technical Community College

This Bond will fund construction of new buildings for both Allied Health and Life Science. The new structures will fill the need for additional classrooms and modernized lab facilities for training future healthcare professionals and others in the fields of Life Science.

Museum of Life +Science

Funding will support the expansion and modernization of the museum’s learning environments, improve and expand visitor infrastructure, and make significant sustainability upgrades. This bond provides for the creation of new exhibits in both indoor and outdoor spaces, renovations, and expanded programming.
